A storefront at 3054 N. Sheffield Ave. is bringing visual art, punk’s DIY traditions and experimental sound into the same room. KIOSK’s I Am A Rock I Am A Roll continues through November 15 as part of Goethe-Institut Chicago’s Punk@50 programming.

The exhibition includes Wesley Willis, Betsy Odom, Jonas Müller-Ahlheim and Naomi Shintani Deibel. Its pairing of punk and self-taught art opens a useful question: what happens when people build their own forms of expression with the materials and spaces available to them?

An October 15 program extends that inquiry into sound. Radio As Instrument I, scheduled for 7 p.m., includes selected recordings and new work from Lia Kohl, Gerrit Hatcher and Sam Wagster. It offers another entry into the exhibition for listeners interested in the possibilities of radio beyond broadcasting songs.

KIOSK lists Sunday viewing hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 18 and 25 and November 1, 8 and 15. The storefront format puts this mix of artists and practices at a neighborhood scale.

See KIOSK’s project page for the program and visiting information, and The Visualist’s exhibition listing for additional context.
