Zenareeta honors her mother’s unfinished musical journey on “SumuHood”

For Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Zenareeta, “SumuHood” begins with the musical life her mother put aside. The new single reflects on a radio and television singer who stepped away from her career to raise her daughter, according to the release announcement.

Zenareeta says her own national radio exposure in India led her to think more deeply about that history. Listeners heard a daughter following in her mother’s footsteps; the song considers the sacrifices that made those footsteps possible.

“She gave up her voice so mine could exist,” Zenareeta says in the press materials. The accompanying music video extends that idea through a symbolic autobiographical short film centered on her mother.

The artist describes the song arriving during a late-night meditation session, with its words and melody taking shape together. She recorded the idea on her phone and wrote it in a journal, then kept the finished song close to that first version.

The announcement describes falsetto vocals, bright synthesizers and a rhythmic pop arrangement. Those production details sit alongside a family story rooted in gratitude, memory and the possibility of continuing a creative life across generations.

Zenareeta’s broader work draws on meditation and Eastern philosophy, but the focus here is a specific relationship: a daughter recognizing her mother’s artistic calling through her own.
