Steppenwolf’s Adirondack Chair Circle turns a book-ban campaign into suburban satire

A group of suburban mothers organizing to remove books from a school library becomes the center of Adirondack Chair Circle, a new satire by Chicago playwright Stephanie Alison Walker. Steppenwolf Theatre Company will present the world premiere October 22–December 6, 2026, in its Ensemble Theater, 1646 N. Halsted St.

Pam MacKinnon directs the production, which follows a seemingly united group as its members’ commitments and private disagreements begin to collide. The announcement describes a play concerned with the gap between publicly claimed causes and the relationships that sustain them.

Ensemble member Caroline Neff plays Evelyn Grace, with David Darrow as Crow, Katrina Lenk as Banna, Wendy Mateo as Winona and Sadieh Rifai as Libby. Lenk returns to Steppenwolf for the first time since Lost Land in 2005, while Mateo makes her company debut.

The creative team includes Todd Rosenthal on scenic design, Izumi Inaba on costumes, Barbara Samuels on lighting, Mikhail Fiksel on sound and Nicholas Hussong on projections. Steph Paul provides choreography and Bryar Barborka serves as dramaturg.

Previews run October 22–31, followed by a November 1 opening at 6 p.m. and regular performances beginning November 3. The schedule includes open-captioned performances November 7, 19 and 28; an audio-described performance and touch tour November 22; and an ASL-interpreted performance December 4.

Single tickets are listed at $20–$149, including the stated handling fee. Steppenwolf also offers a limited allotment of $20 tickets through its 20FOR20 program. See Steppenwolf’s website for performance times, calendar exceptions and tickets.
