Chicago songwriter Stephen Kohler wrote “Step Into Your Shoes” for his eldest son, a premedical student living with long COVID, according to release materials supplied by NoVo Management and Publicity.
The materials describe his son as someone who “has dedicated his life to helping others.” The single follows “Paintbrush,” which was inspired by Kohler’s late brother and uses his brother’s artwork.
“For Chicago-based singer-songwriter Stephen Kohler, music represents a universal language that allows all of us to connect and express,” publicist August Forte wrote.
Kohler began playing trumpet at 12 before adding guitar, piano and singing. His Chicago work includes the bands Delusions of Grandeur, Braintree and Bed, with performances at venues including Metro, Double Door, Lounge Ax, SPACE, Uncommon Ground and Beat Kitchen.
His 2022 solo album, “Daydream,” and 2025 follow-up, “Anthem,” were produced by Liam Davis of Frisbie. “Anthem” also features Frisbie drummer Gerald Dowd.
Kohler performed “Step Into Your Shoes” and “Paintbrush” on WGN’s “Midday News.” Both songs and their credits are available through his Bandcamp pages for “Step Into Your Shoes” and “Paintbrush.”
